A North Carolina prosecutor says he's taking a new look at the case of a teenager who police say shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a patrol cruiser.
Durham County District Attorney Leon Stanback said Tuesday that he's asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into a tip in the case of 17-year-old Jesus Huerta. The DA agreed to resume the investigation after meeting with the SBI and the Huerta family's attorney.
Police say evidence collected during their investigation indicates Huerta killed himself with a concealed pistol that a rookie officer failed to find when he frisked him.
The SBI's original investigation went to Stanback this month. Stanback said he found no probable cause to believe a crime was committed and closed the case.
