Fired Deputy Fire Chief Charged With Embezzling From Department, Relief Fund

A former deputy chief at the North Topsail Beach Fire Department has been charged with embezzling more than $60,000.

Warrants say that 48-year-old George Moore, III, was charged Thursday by the state Department of Insurance Criminal Investigation unit with four counts of embezzlement.

Documents say Moore took $61,000 belonging to the department and the Local Firefighters Relief Fund between 2009 and last year. Investigators say Moore withdrew money on 22 separate occasions for his personal use.

The Sneads Ferry man served as treasurer and trustee of the relief fund.

North Topsail Beach says he worked for them from May 2003 until he was fired on October 1st. Moore was also the town's assistant fire marshal and made $52,170 a year.

Moore is free on $40,000 bond and his lawyer is expected to be in court this morning for his first appearance.
