DEPUTIES: Beaufort County Mom Charged After Leaving Baby Locked In Hot Car

A mother has been charged after deputies say she left her six month old son locked in a hot car.

Kayla Perez De Jesus of Washington was charged with a misdemeanor by Craven County deputies on Monday.

It happened in the parking lot of the Handy Mart on Highway 17 in Bridgeton just before 5:00 p.m. Saturday when it was 89 degrees outside.

An off-duty deputy saw the baby in the rear seat, locked in a car seat. He was crying and sweating.

Deputies say the mother had two other children with her inside the store.

Perez De Jesus was arrested in Beaufort County and released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

Deputies say the mother was not charged with a felony because they felt the circumstances didn't meet the criteria for that crime.

The Beaufort County Department of Social Services is also investigating.
