NEW INFO: Croatan National Forest Wildfire "Suspicious"

The U.S. Forest Service now says a wildfire that began Sunday night in the Croatan National Forest is suspicious.

Crews said the 533-acre wildfire near Highway 24 and Nine Mile Road is 100% contained.

The fire was discovered Sunday night and foresters said people started the fire.

Crews said while roads are open, the Patsy Pond Hiking Trail is closed.

The Forest Service said no injuries or property damage had been reported.

Forest Service officials say that the number of acres burned remains around 533 as of 8:00 Monday night.

Crews will be back out Tuesday morning to continue the battle. They hope to reach 100% containment by 6:00 Tuesday night.

The U.S. Forest Service says it expects the wildfire burning in the Croatan National Forest to be fully contained by Tuesday.

The fire is near Highway 24 and Nine Mile Road and so far has scorched 533 acres.

Roads in the area remain open, but foresters say the Patsy Pond Hiking Trail is closed.

Hundreds of acres have been scorched in a wildfire in the Croatan National Forest.

The U.S. Forest Service says it believes people started the fire which they were alerted to around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night. So far some 533 acres have burned near Highway 24 and Nine Mile Road.

Nearly 20 firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service, volunteer first departments and the Defense Department are working to contain the fire.

Foresters say the fire is 50% contained and no injuries or property damage has been reported.
