Coast Guard Rescues Man Off Atlantic Beach

A Virginia man was rescued off the Crystal Coast after he abandoned his 28-foot sailboat this morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard says Jay White of Gloucester radioed in a mayday, saying that his boat was taking on water. He was 20 miles south of Atlantic Beach.

A 47-foot motor life boat from Fort Macon, a 45-foot medium response boat from Emerald Isle and the Coast Guard Cutter Staten Island responded.

White was in his life raft and was rescued around 8:15 a.m.

Two nearby Navy ships, the USS Kearsage and USS San Antonio responded, but stood down when they learned White had been rescued.
