Child Hurt, Driver Charged With Passing Stopped School Bus

A middle school student was hit by a passing vehicle as he was crossing the road to catch his school bus this morning.

Troopers say Jesus Ortis-Licea broke his leg and had cuts on his face in the 6:20 a.m. accident on Highway 58, south of Castalia.

Nash-Rocky Mount Schools say the child is an 8th grader at Red Oak Middle School and the bus had its warning lights on and stop arm extended when the vehicle struck him.

The Highway Patrol has charged Nicholas Benitez with passing a stopped school bus, having a revoked license and having unsafe tires.

School Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson met with the child and his family at the hospital this morning.
