Investigators say a 15-year-old driver fleeing from police ran off a road and hit a tree near Mount Airy, killing a 9-year-old passenger.

Authorities say an officer noticed the vehicle speeding while heading south on U.S. Highway 52 around 11:55 p.m. Saturday.

Police say the chase went off the freeway, and the driver crashed into a tree, with the vehicle overturning in the Ararat River.

The 9-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 15-year-old driver was treated and released at the hospital.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim or the driver. They say the investigation into the chase and crash are continuing.
