NEW INFO: Nine Rescued After Charter Boat Hits Bonner Bridge

Nine people were rescued Monday morning after a charter fishing boat hit the Bonner Bridge just before sunrise Monday.

Dare County Emergency Manager Sandy Sanderson says a 58-foot boat collided with one of the support systems for a bridge piling around 6 a.m. Sanderson says there is no damage to the bridge, but the boat is partially submerged. However, Sanderson says the boat is not impacting traffic in the water.

The Coast Guard says nine people on the Sandra D were rescued, three who had minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital.

The Coast Guard says the boat had a five-foot by 10-foot hole in its bow.

The Sandra D's owner intentionally grounded the boat to keep it from sinking, while the NCDOT will inspect the bridge to make sure there was no damage.
