Charlotte-Funded Study: Regional Authority Should Run CLT Airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- A study on the future of Charlotte's airport says an independent airport authority would be the best way to operate the facility.

The study's final draft released Thursday says an oversight body would be the best way to continue the airport's success.

The city currently runs Charlotte Douglas International -- the nation's eighth-busiest airport.

The state Senate has approved legislation shifting power to run the airport to a regional authority. The legislation is pending in the House. Mayor Anthony Foxx and the city council oppose the move, and the city hired consulting firm Oliver Wyman to study the issue.

A spokesman for the mayor's office says the report lays out both sides clearly, but the issue is not something that should be rushed by legislators.
