The Carteret County School District says it will run out of money to fuel their school buses by the end of the school year.
In last year's budget, North Carolina legislators set aside gas money at $2.55 a gallon for Diesel. With the rising cost of gas, schools in Carteret County are paying $3.44 a gallon to run their 101 school buses.
Transportation director Lloyd Willis says this isn't a new problem. Willis says, "Last year I think we ran out towards the middle of April. The state did give us an emergency allotment of fuel money, we still ran out of money by the end of the school year."
If the state doesn't hand out more cash, the bill will fall to Carteret County taxpayers.
With the 15,000 gallons of diesel the buses go through every two weeks, at today's gas prices, that's about $50,000 a month.
