A man has been charged after police say his vehicle crashed into the lobby of the main post office in New Bern this morning, shutting down part of the facility.

Postal Service spokeswoman Monica Coachman says retail services for the post office on Glenburnie Road were not able to open as scheduled. Around 10:10 a.m. the building was deemed safe for customers.

New Bern police say Charles Dietz has been charged with filing a false police report, hit and run, and defacing a public building.

Police say around 4:20 a.m. Dietz reported his car stolen. A short time later officers found it partially inside the post office.

Records show the 42-year-old Dietz has two DWI convictions, as well as driving on revoked license convictions, and multiple drug possession convictions.

Dietz was jailed on a $5,000 bond and is expected in court today.
