Commuting on and off Camp Lejeune is about to get a little bit easier as the military base opens its new gate entrance to drivers.
Starting Thursday, two inbound lanes of the Wilson Boulevard Gate are scheduled to open weekday mornings to authorized base personnel between 5:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.
The gate's two outbound lanes will remain open 24 hours, seven days a week.
Those lanes will start at the intersection of Bell Fork Road and NC-24, ending at Brewster Boulevard.
Both the gate and inbound lanes will close at 8 a.m. to accommodate ongoing construction.
Access to the new inbound lanes via Bougainville Road from Tarawa Terrace will close at that time as well.
Col. James Clark of Camp Lejeune said this is the first part of a multi-phased effort to ease the traffic issue that plagued the military base for years.
The construction of new roads and lane-widening projects is expected to be completed by October 2015.
