Camp Lejeune Marines, Sailor Receive Purple Heart

Nine marines and a sailor based at Camp Lejeune, just back from Afghanistan, received the purple heart medal and one Marine received the Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal for their actions in their support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They all serve with with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment

One Marine, Private 1st Class Duncan Mathis of Wilson, was recognized for his outstanding performance under a high-stress situation. While on patrol, he stepped into a well and fell about 50 feet, broke both legs and several other bones, then applied a tourniquet, and radioed for help.

After the ceremony, Marines were met by Brigadier General Burke Whitman, who expressed his thanks to them for what they endured.
