A Camp Lejeune Marine charged with killing a baby boy made his first appearance in court Wednesday. He was not given bond and remains behind bars.
23-year-old Lance Corporal Matthew Krause of Maysville is accused of shaking his girlfriend's baby to death this summer. During his first appearance in Onslow County Court Wednesday morning, it was determined he will have a lawyer appointed to represent him. His next court date is October 30.
Investigators say the baby, Zander Bagwell, had been admitted to the hospital after emergency workers found the baby unresponsive in the care of Krause.
Authorities say 23-year-old Lance Corporal Matthew Krause of Maysville is charged with murder, negligent child abuse, serious bodily injury contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, abuse and neglect.
Investigators from the Onslow County Sheriff's Office and Naval Criminal Investigative Service say they responded to the Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune July 28th in reference to an unresponsive 11-month old.
Investigators say the infant had been admitted to the hospital after emergency workers found the infant unresponsive in the care of Krause, who is the mother's boyfriend.
The infant died the next day.
Tuesday the medical examiner's office confirmed the infant sustained injuries consistent with "shaken baby".
Krause has been in the brig aboard Camp Lejeune since the death of the infant and is expected in Onslow County court Wednesday.
