Authorities are praising a 5-year-old boy who managed to crawl out of a wrecked van and get help for his seriously injured mother.
The Courier-Tribune of Asheboro reports that 32-year-old Carla Roberts of Asheboro was on her way to pick up another son Wednesday afternoon when her van went off the road around a curve, hit a sign, went down an embankment, crossed a creek and landed on the driver's side.
The 5-year-old climbed to the top of the embankment, where a nearby resident was approaching.
Roberts was airlifted to a hospital and was in stable condition.
Trooper Steven Vaughn says if the boy hadn't been so brave, help could have taken a long time. The van was not visible from the road, and there's little cell phone reception.
