The only road onto a North Carolina barrier island damaged by Hurricane Arthur has been reopened to everyone.
Transportation officials opened the Bonner Bridge on North Carolina Highway 12 to all traffic around 4 p.m. Saturday. Permanent residents and employees of businesses that need to get ready to accommodate arriving tourists were allowed back on to Hatteras Island four hours earlier.
The highway had been closed since early Thursday as the hurricane approached. A small section of the fragile roadway buckled after being submerged by churning waters during the Category 2 hurricane. Officials also tested the two-mile-long Bonner Bridge onto the island to ensure it was safe for traffic.
Visitors are still being kept off Ocracoke Island, where crews don't expect to restore power until Sunday.
