Berger Nixes UNC Campus Closings In Senate Budget

The top leader of the North Carolina Senate says he doesn't envision his chamber's state budget proposal will direct any closings of the University of North Carolina system's 17 campuses.

Senate leader Phil Berger made the comment Wednesday, a few weeks before his colleagues roll out a state government spending proposal for the next two years.

A key budget-writer said last month campus consolidation would be one of many things getting consideration this year to find efficiencies and cost savings.

Berger told reporters that many people have talked about campus closings in the past and will continue to do so. Berger says the UNC system doesn't have to look the same way forever and still remain one of the best in the country.
