A winter storm warning is in effect today for Beaufort, Dare, mainland Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties. A winter storm advisory is in effect today for the rest of Eastern Carolina. The threats are snow, sleet and freezing rain.
A Beaufort man was listed in serious condition Monday after he was rescued from the water off Fort Macon Saturday. On Sunday, the man was listed in fair condition.
Officials say the 35 year old was rescued from the water Saturday afternoon, and other beach-goers performed CPR. It's not clear if he was caught in a rip current.
Atlantic Beach Fire Department Captain Kevin White says a 35-year-old man from Beaufort went underwater in the ocean about 2:45 p.m. at Fort Macon in the beach area near the Picnic Park Drive parking lot.
Captain White says the man's children called for help and bystanders pulled him to the beach where a doctor and nurses happened to be spending the day. One of them gave the unconscious man CPR.
White says EMS arrived and the man was breathing on his own by the time he got to Carteret General Hospital. He was then transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. He was listed in critical condition late Saturday.
Authorities are not releasing his name yet to make sure all of his immediate family members have been notified of the rescue.
Officials are not sure if the man was caught in a rip current, but there was low risk for rip currents Saturday.
