Bear Creek Fire Department Concerned About Underage Partying

The Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Onslow County is pleading with the community to stop underage partying that the fire chief says has led to several dangerous incidents in the past couple of years.

The most recent incident was this past weekend when chief Brian Romans says a juvenile ran her car off the road and missed hitting a utility pole by just feet.

The Highway Patrol says the 16-year-old who wrecked her car of Bear Creek Road this past weekend is charged with a DWI, but she was not seriously hurt.

That is not the only incident to reportedly come out of partying off Bear Creek Road. There was also a large fire back in 2012 nearby and people have also reported shots fired in the area-even with shotgun pellets hitting their home.

When we visited the area Tuesday we saw beer cans and shotgun shells littering the area off Bear Creek Road near Justin Catfish Lane. The dirt road that leads to a picnic shelter is not marked with a street sign, but the Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department chief says it is marked with memories of dangerous decisions that created some close calls, including the one early Sunday morning.

Chief Romans says, "For a young juvenile to be intoxicated at 1:00 o'clock in the morning and almost wreck her car, almost hit a power pole head on. That to me says someone needs to be aware of what's going on in the area."

Chief Romans posted on the fire department's Facebook page right after responding to the wreck Sunday morning, alerting the community about the parties. He says oftentimes, those partying are gone before deputies ever arrive.
