Baby Dies One Week After Bathtub Accident

A Jacksonville baby will be laid to rest Sunday in Kentucky after the family says he was injured in a bathtub fall a week ago.

Grant Torkelson died Thursday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Jacksonville police say they were called to the family home on East Windgate Court last Friday morning around 10:40 a.m. on a call for a baby having trouble breathing. A police spokeswoman says the child's death remains an open investigation at this time.

The family tells our sister station, WKYT-TV in Lexington, that the 8-month-old died after an accident in a bathtub.

The family set up a Facebook tribute page entitled "Team Grant", which is helping them grieve. So far more than 16,700 people from across the world "like" the page.

On Thursday his mother gave this update: "Grant went to be with Jesus today at 1:40 p.m. he took his last breath in mommy and daddy's arms. We miss the little prince already but he is playing in the streets of heaven, No more suffering just little man playing. Prayers for our family please. Thank you for the continuous support. -Alyson"

A fund has been set up to help the family with hospital and funeral expenses in their hometown of McCreary County, Kentucky. Donations can be made at the Bank of McCreary County or at the McCreary Christian Center.
