The Greenville Police Department says Detective Alvaro Elias has been arrested on one count of violating a domestic violence protective order.
The 38-year-old Elias has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of court proceedings.
Greenville police say on October 2 the department was made aware of a domestic complaint against detective Elias.
The department requested a criminal investigation to be completed by the Pitt County Sheriff's Domestic Violence Unit.
"The alleged offenses occurred within the City of Greenville, but because of a clear and present conflict of interest, I asked the Pitt County Sheriff's Office to lead the investigation," states Chief of Police Hassan Aden.
A domestic violence protective order was issued by District Court Judge David Leach, and served against Elias.
He was relieved of his police powers and placed on administrative duties at that time.
On Tuesday October 8, Sheriff's deputies obtained an arrest warrant against Elias which alleges that he violated the terms of the DVPO by making third-party contact with the complaining witness.
Elias was served at the Pitt County Detention Center and is being held without bond pending a first appearance in district court on Wednesday October 9.
Detective Elias is an eight year veteran of the Greenville Police Department. He has been assigned to the Major Crimes Unit for approximately 2 years.
The Greenville Police Department will conduct an internal affairs investigation parallel to the criminal complaint being investigated by the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.
