NEW INFO: Gas Leak Secured On Neuse Blvd. In New Bern

By  |

Fire officials say a gas leak that has shut down a major New Bern street has been secured.

Neuse Boulevard reopened to traffic, one lane in each direction and businesses were allowed to reopen as well.

The underground leak was detected around 6:30 a.m. and happened in front of the Craven County Health Department.

The city says the gas line is nearly 40 years old and they believe when a contractor working on a water line project began moving heavy equipment this morning, it jarred the underground gas line and cracked the pipe.

Piedmont Natural Gas has decided they will replace the section that ruptured and hope to have service fulled restored before cold temps set in tonight.
