Vanceboro Police have charged a mother misdemeanor child abuse after her 2-year-old child was found wandering down Main Street. Ivey Barfield was given a $500 bond.
A passing motorist spotted the child and took him to the nearby Wells Fargo Bank and called police.
The woman tells WITN the child was in the middle of the east bound lane and she had to slam on her brakes to avoid hitting the boy. She also says it was pouring down rain at the time and the boy had his arms outstretched as if waiting for someone to pick him up.
Police Chief Jimmy Jenkins says the boy lives nearby and wandered out of the house while his mother was sleeping.
