Roads Reopen After Propane Gas Truck Overturns

Two roads were closed and several homes were evacuated after a truck carrying propane flipped over this afternoon in Beaufort County.

Taylor Road and Frederick Road reopened once again around 4:45 p.m. to traffic. The 12:50 p.m. crash involved a propane truck and an SUV.

Leta Thompson was one of the people forced from their homes. "I don't think people are used to the stop sign, and they'll just go right through," said Thompson. "And we've had several accidents, and some were pretty bad."

Trooper B.L. Michael says the Suburban Propane truck from Williamston was northbound on Frederick Road and didn't stop at a stop sign. He says it hit an SUV, which was on Taylor Road.

Both drivers were taken to Vidant Beaufort Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Highway Patrol says James Sutton of Farmville, the driver of the propane truck, was charged with failure to stop at the stop sign.

Several homes have been evacuated after a propane gas tanker truck overturned this afternoon in Beaufort County.

The crash has closed down Taylor Road and Frederick Road, which is the detour around Chocowinity.

The wreck happened around 12:50 p.m. and involved an SUV and the tanker. The driver of the SUV was thrown from their vehicle.

Crews managed to close off the propane valve on the truck, but they also had concern with the heat that valve may pop off and cause the gas to escape. So fire crews sprayed foam on the tanker to try keeping it cool.

Beaufort County Schools notified parents in the area of potential bus delays and interruptions this afternoon.
