FIRST ON WITN: Deputy Fire Chief Charged With Stealing $300,000

A deputy fire chief is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his own fire department.

Warsaw police say they arrested Joey Burgette last night on eight counts of felony embezzlement. Police Chief Joseph Webster says the 42-year-old deputy fire chief and department treasurer stole about $300,000 from the Warsaw Fire Department, starting in 2005.

Fellow firefighters originally brought their concerns to the fire chief who then notified the police chief.

Burgette was released on a $40,000 secured bond. He has a September 21st court date.

Warsaw is a volunteer fire department. Chief Webster says Burgette, a member since 1998, was asked to resign from the fire department.
