Ayden Police Chief Seeks Funds For Additional Officers

Violent crimes and the possible tie they have to gang activity is a concern for the Ayden police department and the reason the police chief is asking the town to help.

Ayden Police Chief Barry Stanley is requesting funds from the town to help pay for overtime and eventually another officer.

Stanley says he's concerned with the violence in this small community of just five thousand people.

He says suspected gang activity could be the reason for recent shootings, all of which have resulted in arrests.

Chief Stanley say they've placed officers in high crime areas around town, but now will need to pay for overtime.

Stanley says, "We will talk to the board about adding an officer, a drug officer or gang officer, that's just part of the overall discussion. But we're looking at the possibility of using a number of reserve officers, what ever is the most effective and has the board support."
