Ayden Man Accused Of Kidnapping And Assaulting Woman

A Pitt County man accused of brutally beating a woman is off the streets and behind bars.

Greenville police arrested 40-year-old Sherman Smith of Ayden. Officials say he kidnapped a 40-year-old woman Monday, and beat her badly. The woman is being treated for broken ribs, a collapsed lung, severe bruising on various parts of the upper body, a black eye, and a cut lip. Police say Smith also cut her throat when he held a knife to it.

Smith's bond is set at $300,000.

Greenville police originally reported the victim as a 16-year-old girl but later corrected that to say she is a 40-year-old woman.
