After nearly two years of sitting idle because of damaged from Hurricane Irene, the largest beachfront hotel on the Crystal Coast is open again for business.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront reopened this morning following a $5 million renovation.
After damage from Irene, the old Sheraton went bankrupt and the 200-room hotel was sold at auction on the courthouse steps. The Newport Group, which also owns the Hilton in downtown New Bern, purchased the building in December for $4.56 million.
Neighboring business have felt the loss of traffic in the area since the hotel closed and are welcoming its reopening.
