Volunteers and community partners who helped when residents of a Kinston apartment complex had to be evacuated because of a fire, were honored Thursday.
The American Red Cross honored those who helped during and after the fire that broke out in Kinston Towers apartments in June, home to many elderly and disabled people.
Nearly 150 residents were evacuated and brought to the Fairfield Recreation Center, where the American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter.
The residents were later relocated to area hotels where they would have to wait 23 days to return home while the building was repaired.
The Red Cross hosted a reception to recognize the volunteers and partners that helped.
