SHERIFF: Arrested Here, Charges Coming In Six More Counties For Copper Theft

Local law enforcement agencies are likely comparing notes now to see if three people suspected of stealing copper from farm irrigation systems could be responsible for similar crimes in their area.

Joshua Hoggard, 22, and James Johnson, 24, (seen here) and Dakota Ray, 23, are all from Bertie County. The Hertford County Sheriff says the three are responsible for stealing copper from several farms by pulling apart their irrigation systems since September.

Sheriff Juan Vaughan told WITN investigators linked these three young men to similar crimes in Gates, Bertie, Martin, Chowan, Washington, and Beaufort counties.

Hoggard and Johnson remain behind bars, while Ray has posted bail. Ray's criminal record shows previous convictions for cruelty to animals and DWI.
