"Active Shooter" Drill at Morehead Middle School

With school safety in the spotlight, one school in the east had a safety drill Friday that looked all too real. The goal of course is to know what to do if the unthinkable happens.

The Morehead City Police and Morehead City Middle School participated in an active shooter drill.

Friday was a teacher work day so only teachers and staff were involved in the drill.

Teachers practiced the drill earlier in the school year and Friday the drill played out. It was as close to real as possible, from the 9-1-1 call, to the lockdown of the school, searches, and even those who were pretending to be shot.

School principal Dr. Sue Kreuser says it was an emotional drill but a necessity. "I've been around a long time and I've been through a lot of drills but I did experience an emotional reaction that was a bit surprising, but that's what we want, that;s what we want to simulate that it is the real thing for our staff members so that they can make the right decision."

Keuser said the drill had been planned since September, however it hit a bit closer to home since the recent tragedy in Newtown.
