APPEALS COURT: Trooper Wrongfully Fired For Lying About Lost Hat

The state Court of Appeals agrees that a former state trooper was wrongfully fired after lying about how he lost his wide-brimmed hat.

Thomas Wetherington was a trooper in Craven County when he was fired in 2009.

The former trooper lost his hat during a traffic stop on Highway 70. Reports indicate Wetherington first told his superiors a gust of wind blew it off his head.

Later, passengers in the stopped car found the hat and turned it in.

A year ago a Wake County Superior Court judge overturned the firing, saying it was too harsh of punishment.

On Tuesday, the higher court upheld that ruling.

We are now awaiting word from the Highway Patrol to find out if Wetherington will be reinstated.
