Some folks did not get a day off at the beach this weekend, especially crews working to make things safer for residents and boaters along Onslow County's coast.
Crews are trying to deepen the channel where the New River crosses the Intracoastal waterway and to remove a dangerous sandbar at the mouth of the New River Inlet. All that work is yielding more than 80,000 cubic yards of sand, which is being pumped to the north end of Topsail Island.
The town of North Topsail Beach will get extra sand to protect exposed beach properties that have literally been underwashed during recent high tides. The dredging work won't yield as much sand as the last project like this. But North Topsail town officials will take up a more long-range beach sand management plan at a special meeting on September 15.
