Still no answers about the fate of a suspended school superintendent.

The Bertie County School Board met behind closed doors for five hours Tuesday, but failed to make any announcement about Superintendent Chip Zullinger.

Zullinger was suspended more than a week ago, just days after the school board voted to back out of the Bertie Connect Deal with Centurylink.

In open session, the board unanimously approved reducing the superintendent's authority to enter into contracts to $25,000 and the superintendent must update the board each month on any new contracts.

The board also voted to suspend the Shaw University Cadet Program which pays for teacher schooling.

That will save the school system some $250-$300,000 a year.

While they are forced to make cuts the board says the cuts will have a minimal effect on the education of the students

The Board of Education will continue its work session Wednesday morning, with another special session scheduled for Thursday and a regular meeting set for next Tuesday.

It was another meeting of the Bertie County School Board that was held behind closed doors as their superintendent remains suspended.

Bertie County Superintendent Chip Zullinger was suspended with pay more than a week ago. In correspondence to Zullinger, the board said the suspension was the first step toward removing Zullinger from his post. The board has not commented on why they suspended Zullinger.

Zullinger was suspended a few days after the Bertie Count Board of Education abruptly canceled an event with Governor Bev Perdue to announce the Connect Bertie Project. That program would provide high-speed internet to the homes of 1,400 students in rural Bertie County.

The school board called what it has termed a "special meeting" for Tuesday at 9 a.m. The agenda called for discussing personnel issues and conducting a work session. The board met behind closed doors for five hours and when it emerged no action was taken.

The Bertie Count Board of Education is also planning to follow up Tuesday's meeting on Wednesday with a separate work session, also at 9 a.m. The agenda for the session includes school system contracts and budget issues.
