Topsail Beach Gets Early Protection

With another hurricane possibly stirring up the surf, one beach town is getting some badly-needed protection early this year.

A big black pipe is bringing sand to the exposed northern end of Topsail Island. The sand is coming from the army's corps of engineers. As the corps dredges out the sand, they are pumping it to the town of North Topsail Beach, to the tune of nearly 80,000 cubic yards.

That's giving more than a million dollars worth of property a little extra protection, which usually would have to wait until after sea turtle nesting season. However, the town got emergency permits to allow that work to take place, hopefully before another hurricane crosses paths with that end of the island.
