Bush Nominates Retired Judge As Next Attorney General

President Bush confirms that he's chosen retired federal judge Michael Mukasey to succeed Alberto Gonzales as attorney general.

The choice of Mukasey could head-off a lengthy confirmation fight, since he has the support of Democrats. If he's confirmed, he'll become Bush's third attorney general.

As he announced the choice outside the White House this morning, Bush described Mukasey as a man who is "clear-eyed about the threat our nation faces."
