A health official says North Carolina needs to significantly change how it educates nurses to avoid a statewide nursing shortage.
Gordon Defriese, President and Chief Executive Officer of the state's Institute of Medicine, told community-college trustees Saturday that it may be difficult to train nurses unless the state gives community college instructors better pay. He also says some programs need to consolidate. That's because five-thousand applicants were turned away from some programs while others didn't have enough students.
