Governor Mike Easley has appointed an acting district attorney for Durham County.
David Saacks takes the position from acting DA Jim Hardin, who will return to the Special Superior Court bench.
Easley says Saacks will serve until a successor is appointed or elected.
The Durham County DA job became vacant when Mike Nifong resigned
earlier this summer. Nifong was disbarred for his handling of the
Duke lacrosse rape case, which resulted in state prosecutors
dismissing all charges against three former players.
Saacks is currently chief assistant district attorney in Durham County. He's handled misdemeanor, felony drug and violent felony prosecutions since 1992.
