Former State GOP Chairman, U.S. Attorney Sentenced

A former U.S. attorney, state judge and state Republican chairman has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison on charges related to tax fraud conspiracy.

Federal prosecutors say 58-year-old Sam T. Currin of Raleigh pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder more than one million dollars through his law firm's client trust account. The U.S. attorney's office in Charlotte says Currin also pleaded guilty to lying on his taxes by failing to report an offshore debit card account.

Officials say Currin also pleaded guilty in a related case to obstructing a grand jury investigation into securities fraud.

Currin was sentenced yesterday in Raleigh. He faced 43 years in
prison.
