More Than 20 Counties Ready To Put Tax Referenda On Fall Ballots

Voters in at least 23 counties will be asked this fall to approve hikes in either sales taxes or real estate transfer taxes to help build new schools and fund other local projects.

The state Association of County Commissioners says the counties need more revenue sources. County commissioners were given the authority to seek the tax increases under a bill approved by the state Legislature this year.

But more than three-quarters of the state's 100 counties have either declined or not yet decided whether to pursue the tax options this year. Officials in four counties plan to pursue one option next spring.

David Young is a Buncombe County commissioner and president of the county association. He says counties need more revenue sources to fund school construction and build water and sewer systems.
