The East Carolina football game against Virginia Tech has local fans torn between rooting for the Pirates while being sympathic to the Hokies.
And the "Marching Pirates" have an even more stressful task of keeping the purple and gold pride strong during the game. As they practiced Friday, their band director reminded them this is about more than just a game, it's about moving on from the senseless tragedy and being able to celebrate again.
Band members agree and hope they can honor Virginia Tech victims while still respectfully rooting for the Pirates.
Band members say they will wear burgundy and orange ribbons on their uniforms to honor the Hokies who lost a bandmember during the shooting rampage.
