Officials with the Aulander volunteer rescue squad say county leaders cut their funding in half, forcing them to shut down Tuesday after forty nine years. Town commissioner Bobbie Parker says service is now inadequate. Phone calls to Bertie County officials were not returned. Aulander was the second town in the state to have a rescue squad.
