The search for a missing fisherman is over. Crews found his body early Tuesday morning near Ragged Point.

Authorities tell WITN News, the body of 69- year-old Wilbur Sawyer was found after midnight Tuesday morning-- around the Ragged Point area of the Pamlico River in Beaufort county.

With the use of a side sonar, the Sidney Dive Team was able to recover Sawyer's body.

The commercial fisherman went overboard Monday, which led to this exhausting and intensive search.

Previous Story

A recovery mission is underway for a missing fisherman after crews spent most of Monday actively searching the Pamlico for a missing man.

Multiple agencies scanned the Pamlico inside the Goose Creek State Park in efforts to find a 69-year-old commercial fisherman.

Authorities say the man went overboard around 2PM Monday.

A U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter scoured the area around Ragged Point where officials say the man fell into the water.

Ted Wallace with the Sidney Dive Teams says high winds caused quite a challenge for divers during the search. Crews are using side sonar devices.

Authorities say crews will continue the search until 7 AM Friday.

Previous Story

A dive team is helping with the search and rescue for a missing commercial fisherman in the Pamlico River.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a man on a 19-foot crab boat went overboard around 2:00 p.m. off Ragged Point, that's near Goose Creek State Park.

A passing tug boat spotted the 69-year-old man and threw him a life jacket, but the man was never seen again.

The Coast Guard has sent a boat from Hobucken and a helicopter from Elizabeth City. The Sidney Dive Team is on scene, along with rescue teams from the Wildlife Commission, Marine Fisheries, and the Bath and Bunyan volunteer fire departments.

Beaufort County authorities have set up a command center on Dinahs Landing.
