The acting medical director at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro will stay off the job for at least another week.
In July Dr. Robert Owens was placed under investigatory leave the day after WITN started asking questions about the physician and his criminal past.
Owens was convicted nearly 20 years ago for taking indecent liberties with a child. State officials say when Owens was first hired in 1993 there was no law requiring criminal background checks.
Owens 30 days of paid leave ran out Sunday. But a state Department of Health & Human Services spokeswoman says that has been extended until September 4th.
In July DHHS Spokeswoman Debbie Crane said the investigation will determine if Dr. Owens will return to the hospital and if procedures need to be changed.
