Search for the U.S.S. Alligator

What a story off our coast this weekend, a story ECU researchers are fortunate to be a part of!

The search is going to begin for the U.S.S. Alligator, which was the U.S. Navy's first submarine. The 47-foot vessel was being towed to Charleston, South Carolina to battle the Confederate Navy in April 1863 when it sank during a storm.

The search for the U.S.S. Alligator's remains will start about 20 miles southeast of Ocracoke Island. Naval researchers, folks from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and ECU researchers are all taking part in the hunt.
