Country Rover Gives Us a History Lesson

There's a boat that is directly connected with Eastern Carolina's past. It's called a Periauger. It is a dugout boat used to transport materials on the water.

A replica was built at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and by volunteers in Hertford at the Newbold-White house. That's the oldest brick home in North Carolina, built in 1730. And its builder also owned a Periauger.

You can get a first hand look at this piece of maritime history. The Periauger will be making its way to lots of Eastern Carolina's port towns, on the way back to Hertford, where it will begin its new life, on September 11 at the Indian Summer Festival.
