Mother Shot While Picking Up Child at Day Care Center

A Halifax County man is accused of chasing his child's mother through Weldon Day Care and shooting her in the leg while she was holding her six-month-old baby.

The woman, Ebony Lane, is recovering at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. None of the children, including the baby she was holding, were hurt. Bruce Jarrett of Weldon is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and other crimes.

Authorities say the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. Authorities say Lane was making her way to the parking lot when Jarrett followed her out the door and immediately fired at her about 10 feet away with a 20 gauge sawed off shot gun.

Jarrett remains in custody. Lane is in good condition recovering at the hospital.
