Drought Closes Five Lake Norman Boat Ramps

Mecklenburg County is closing five boats ramps on Lake Norman as the continuing drought drops the lake level even lower.

The county closed one of the four ramps at Ramsey Creek in Cornelius and four of the six at Blythe Landing in Cornelius. County Park and Recreation Department spokesman Mike Cozza said the ramps have become unsafe for boat launching.

It's the first closing of ramps on Lake Norman this year, although the public beach at Lake Norman State Park was closed Friday. Officials last week also closed the swimming area at Lake James State Park and boat ramps at Hidden Cove and Glinville -- both on Lake James. Public ramps on Lake Wylie at Copperhead Island and Allison Creek were also closed recently.

Duke Energy representatives say there could be more closings by early next week if there's no significant rainfall.
