Drought Relief For Farmers

Governor Mike Easley says he'll ask the U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Mike Johanns for a federal disaster declaration for these
farmers. That would allow them to apply for low-interest emergency
relief loans.

Easley says almost all of North Carolina's 100 counties may be
affected by the request.

The state's Drought Advisory Council says more than three
quarters of North Carolina's counties are in severe drought.
Sixteen counties are in extreme drought, 20 are in moderate
drought, and six coastal counties are classified as abnormally dry.
