Business is booming in Pitt County. Several new restaurants and businesses have opened in the past year. But still, Eastern Carolina's unemployment rate remains higher than the rest of the state.
John Chaffee, Executive Director of the Pitt County Development Commission, says it's due to a phenomenon called polarization. Chaffee says polarization occurs when a large number of workers leave one industry and flood into another.
Chaffee says things are looking up though. He says Greenville is becoming a regional hub and attracting more businesses.
